How often do you wish you could make some extra money outside of your traditional job? Well friends, there has never been a better time then now to start a side hustle. Job security is a thing of the past and having a side hustle can help better prepare you for change.
So what exactly is a side hustle?
The term ‘hustle’ often has a negative connotation like selling illegal copies of DVD’s on the street, drug dealing, or coercing someone into doing or choosing something they dont want.
But in this context, the word ‘hustle’ refers to being a go-getter, a goal chaser and on a mission to achieve financial freedom faster. To hustle means to accomplish more than being a couch potato watching tv in your spare time.
It means finding something you are passionate about and working hard to create a life that YOU love.
A side hustle is a business you have on the side while still working your full-time job. The business can be anything from a meal delivery service, a mommy blogger, a coach, a professional organizer or a cleaning service.
According to Chris Guillebeau, author of Side Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days, a side hustle is not some get rich-quick scheme. So please don’t go quitting your full time jobs to sell face masks on your smartphone or flip houses with borrowed money. With a side hustle, you earn money without quitting your job (that’s why it’s called a side hustle).
Side hustle definition simplified
Here’s the real truth. A side hustlers primary goal is to make more money to help supplement their 9 to 5 or make enough money to replace it completely. It’s that simple!
I feel that to hustle is to have the courage, confidence, and self-determination to go out there and work it out until you discover the opportunities you want in life.
Side hustles can either take up a lot of your spare time or only a couple hours a week. The choice is yours and that’s what’s so wonderful about side hustles. YOU are the one who gets to decide how much time you want to invest in your side hustle.
Why you should have a side hustle
Making some extra money can help you get out of debt faster, help fund your dream vacation, or allow you to invest in your start-up idea. Having a second (or third or fourth) stream of income to supplement full-time is a smart idea and you never know where it might lead you.
Maybe you’ve always loved baking and want to start selling your delicious goodies at the local farmer’s market. I know someone who has done this in my hometown. She has been able to have her baking side hustle business while being a stay at home mom raising her three beautiful daughters (plus one on the way!). Her energetic drive and passion continues to inspire me!
Do you ever get sick of feeling drained, unhappy, dreading Monday and wanting out of the rat race?
Believe me I know what it’s like to live like this and it’s not fun. I know the pain of working a job that you don’t like. Well let me be honest, that you hate.
Having a side hustle will make you feel more alive and passionate about your life. You chose your side hustle because you like it or because it will help you achieve long term financial goals. A side hustle brings you joy and fulfillment and it allows you to be creative outside your normal 9-5 job.
Having said all that, a side hustle might not always be glamourous (hello yard work anyone?). But it will bring you one step closer to reaching your goals and living the life you want to live.
And do not fret if you still don’t really know what that life looks like, because having a side hustle might just lead you to discover your new passion. A side hustle can open doors to new opportunities that you never even knew existed.
If you are tired of the daily grind sucking all of your energy, then I seriously suggest you start a side hustle.
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
~ Abraham Lincoln ~
Everyday I’m Hustlin’
Blogging has been a new side hustle adventure for me and while it might not be making me money (yet!), I feel more productive and excited about life because of it. I can’t wait to see where blogging takes me and I’m grateful for having this opportunity to learn and grow.
My other side hustle is cleaning the gym I go to once a week and this earns me around 400 Swiss Franks a month. It pays for my CrossFit membership.. plus some! Like I said earlier, a side hustle will not always be the most glamourous type of work but it will help you in the long run.
And it’s definitely better then sitting at home, complaining about how you’re not living a passionate life while eating a tub of Ben and Jerry’s and binge watching Stranger Things. Okay, okay that might be exaggerating a little!
But seriously, why not give a side hustle a try? See where it take you and learn something new along the way.
Now get out there and get hustlin’ my loves!
